Antennaria parlinii ssp. parlinii
Antennaria parlinii ssp.
Also known as: Parlin's Pussytoes
Antennaria parlinii ssp. parlinii, commonly known as Parlin’s Pussytoes, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to eastern North America, primarily found in regions such as the northeastern United States and parts of Canada. This subspecies typically inhabits dry, open woods, grasslands, and rocky slopes, often thriving in well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils. The growth habit of Parlin’s Pussytoes is characterized by a low, mat-forming structure, with individual plants generally reaching a height of 10 to 30 centimeters. The form is typically clumped, with rosettes of leaves that spread horizontally.
The leaves of Antennaria parlinii ssp. parlinii are lanceolate to ovate, measuring 3 to 10 centimeters in length, and are covered with fine hairs that give them a silvery-green appearance. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces small, white to pale pink flower heads arranged in dense clusters atop slender stems. These flower heads are composed of numerous tiny florets, which are attractive to various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Following the flowering stage, the plant develops achenes, which are small, dry fruits that contain a single seed and are dispersed by wind.
Ecologically, Parlin’s Pussytoes plays a role in supporting pollinator populations and can contribute to soil stabilization in its native habitats. It is often associated with early successional communities and can be an important species in restoring disturbed areas. Additionally, the plant has been used in traditional herbal medicine, although specific applications are less documented. An interesting adaptation of Antennaria parlinii ssp. parlinii is its ability to tolerate poor soil conditions and drought, allowing it to thrive in environments where many other species may struggle. This resilience makes it a valuable component of its native ecosystems.
