Also known as: Chamisso Arnica

Arnica chamissonis ssp. foliosa var. maguirei, commonly known as Chamisso Arnica, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western regions of North America, specifically found in the Pacific Northwest, including parts of Oregon and Washington. This variety typically inhabits moist meadows, open forests, and disturbed areas, often thriving in well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 feet. The plant exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of 30 to 60 centimeters, forming a clumping, upright structure with a basal rosette of leaves.

The leaves of Chamisso Arnica are lanceolate to ovate, measuring 5 to 15 centimeters in length, and are characterized by their hairy, dark green surfaces. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that are arranged in loose clusters atop slender, erect stems. Each flower head typically consists of 8 to 12 ray florets surrounding a central disc of numerous tubular florets. The fruit is achenes, equipped with a pappus that aids in wind dispersal, allowing the seeds to spread over a wider area.

Chamisso Arnica plays a significant ecological role as a pioneer species, contributing to soil stabilization and providing nectar for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Additionally, the plant has historical significance in traditional medicine, where it has been used for its anti-inflammatory properties, although caution is advised due to potential toxicity if ingested in large quantities. Adaptations such as its hairy leaves may help reduce water loss and provide some protection against herbivory, making it well-suited to its native habitats.
