Also known as: Snow Arnica

Arnica frigida ssp. frigida, commonly known as Snow Arnica, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the alpine and subalpine regions of western North America, particularly found in areas such as the Rocky Mountains and parts of the Sierra Nevada. This species typically grows in well-drained soils, often in meadows, rocky slopes, and open forests at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. Snow Arnica generally reaches a height of 15 to 30 centimeters, exhibiting a low, spreading growth habit with a rosette of basal leaves.

The leaves of Arnica frigida ssp. frigida are lanceolate to ovate, measuring 5 to 15 centimeters in length, and are characterized by their hairy, green surfaces that provide some protection against harsh alpine conditions. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces distinctive yellow, daisy-like flowers that are borne on slender, erect stems. Each flower head consists of numerous ray florets surrounding a central disc, attracting various pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Following the flowering phase, the plant produces achenes, which are small, dry fruits that facilitate wind dispersal.

Ecologically, Snow Arnica plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to the biodiversity of alpine ecosystems and serving as a food source for pollinators. Additionally, Arnica species, including A. frigida, have been historically used in traditional medicine for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, often applied topically to treat bruises and sprains. An interesting adaptation of Snow Arnica is its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils and withstand cold temperatures, which is facilitated by its hairy leaves that reduce water loss and protect against frost. This resilience allows it to occupy a niche in challenging environments where few other species can survive.
