Arnica lessingii, commonly known as Nodding Arnica, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the northwestern regions of North America, particularly found in areas such as the Pacific Northwest, including parts of Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. This species typically grows in moist, open meadows and along forest edges, thriving at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 meters. Nodding Arnica generally reaches a height of 30 to 60 centimeters and exhibits a clumping growth habit, with its stems often bearing multiple flower heads.

The leaves of Arnica lessingii are lanceolate to elliptical, measuring 5 to 15 centimeters in length, and are arranged in a basal rosette, with some leaves also occurring along the stem. The plant produces distinctive yellow flower heads, which are composed of numerous ray florets surrounding a central disc of tubular florets. These flower heads typically nod or droop, giving rise to the common name “Nodding Arnica.” The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, and the plant’s fruit is achenes, which are small, dry, and indehiscent, equipped with a tuft of fine hairs that facilitate wind dispersal.

Ecologically, Arnica lessingii plays a role in its native habitat as a nectar source for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Additionally, it has been utilized in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties, often used in topical preparations for bruises and sprains. The plant is adapted to its environment through its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils and its capacity to tolerate varying moisture levels, making it a resilient species within its ecological niche.
