Also known as: Seep Arnica

Arnica lonchophylla ssp. arnoglossa, commonly known as Seep Arnica, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, particularly found in moist, alpine, and subalpine environments. Its range extends from the Rocky Mountains in Montana to parts of Idaho and Wyoming. This subspecies typically grows in wet meadows, along stream banks, and in other areas with consistently moist soil, often in association with other herbaceous plants and grasses.

The growth habit of Seep Arnica is characterized by its erect form, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters. The stems are usually unbranched and can be hairy, contributing to the plant’s overall texture. The leaves are lanceolate to linear, measuring 5 to 20 centimeters in length, and are arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant. The inflorescences are composed of bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that bloom from late spring to early summer, attracting various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Each flower head consists of numerous ray florets surrounding a central disc, and the fruit is an achene, which is typically dispersed by wind.

Seep Arnica plays a significant ecological role in its native habitat by providing nectar and pollen for pollinators, contributing to the overall biodiversity of the ecosystem. Additionally, it has been used in traditional herbal medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties, although caution is advised due to potential toxicity if used improperly. One interesting adaptation of this subspecies is its ability to thrive in saturated soils, which allows it to occupy niches that may be inhospitable to many other plant species, thus enhancing its survival in competitive environments.
