Arnica spathulata, commonly known as Klamath Arnica, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, particularly found in the mountainous regions of Northern California and southern Oregon. This species typically grows in moist, well-drained soils, often in meadows or along stream banks at elevations ranging from 1,000 to 2,500 meters. Klamath Arnica generally reaches a height of 30 to 60 centimeters and exhibits a clumping growth habit, forming dense tufts that can spread over time.
The leaves of Arnica spathulata are distinctive, being spatula-shaped and arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant. They are generally dark green, with a slightly hairy surface, and can measure up to 15 centimeters in length. The flowering period occurs in late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that are borne on slender, upright stems. Each flower head consists of numerous ray florets surrounding a central disc, attracting various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. The fruit is a small, elongated achene, which is equipped with a tuft of fine hairs that aid in wind dispersal.
Klamath Arnica has ecological significance in its native habitat, contributing to the biodiversity of meadows and serving as a food source for pollinators. Additionally, it has been historically used in traditional medicine by Indigenous peoples for its anti-inflammatory properties, particularly in treating bruises and sprains. An interesting adaptation of Arnica spathulata is its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils, which allows it to colonize areas where other plants may struggle, thus playing a role in soil stabilization and ecosystem resilience.
