Also known as: Shasta County Arnica
Arnica venosa, commonly known as Shasta County Arnica, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the mountainous regions of northern California, particularly in the Shasta County area. This species typically grows in subalpine to alpine environments, often found in meadows, rocky slopes, and disturbed areas. The plant exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of 30 to 60 centimeters (approximately 12 to 24 inches), with a somewhat upright and bushy form.
The leaves of Arnica venosa are basal, lanceolate to ovate in shape, and can grow up to 15 centimeters long. They are characterized by a dark green color and a slightly hairy texture, which may help reduce water loss in its native habitat. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces bright yellow, daisy-like flowers that are typically arranged in loose clusters atop sturdy stems. Each flower head consists of numerous ray florets surrounding a central disc, attracting various pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The fruit of Arnica venosa is achenes, which are small, dry, and indehiscent, equipped with a tuft of fine hairs that facilitate wind dispersal.
Ecologically, Arnica venosa plays a role in its native habitat by contributing to the floral diversity of subalpine ecosystems and providing nectar and pollen for pollinators. Additionally, like other species in the Arnica genus, it has been traditionally used in herbal medicine for its anti-inflammatory properties, particularly in topical applications for bruises and sprains. An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils, a common characteristic of its alpine environment, allowing it to occupy ecological niches that may be less accessible to other plant species.
