Arnica viscosa, commonly known as Mt.

Also known as: Mt. Shasta Arnica

Arnica viscosa, commonly known as Mt. Shasta Arnica, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the mountainous regions of the western United States, particularly in northern California and southern Oregon. This species typically thrives in subalpine and alpine habitats, often found in meadows, open forests, and rocky slopes at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. The growth habit of Arnica viscosa is characterized by its erect stems, which can reach heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant has a clumping form, with multiple stems emerging from a basal rosette of leaves.

The leaves of Arnica viscosa are lanceolate to elliptic in shape, measuring between 5 to 15 centimeters in length, and are notable for their sticky, glandular surface, which gives the plant its specific epithet “viscosa.” The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are bright yellow and resemble daisies, featuring a central disc surrounded by ray florets. Each flower head can be up to 5 centimeters in diameter and is borne on a solitary stem. The fruit of Arnica viscosa is an achene, which is a small, dry fruit that does not open to release its seeds, aiding in its dispersal by wind.

Ecologically, Arnica viscosa plays a role in its native habitat by providing nectar and pollen for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. The plant has been traditionally used in herbal medicine for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, often applied topically to treat bruises, sprains, and muscle pain. An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils and withstand harsh climatic conditions, which allows it to occupy ecological niches that are less favorable for many other plant species. This resilience contributes to its importance in maintaining the biodiversity of alpine ecosystems.
