Florida Cacalia

Arnoglossum floridanum, commonly known as Florida Cacalia, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southeastern United States, particularly found in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. This species typically grows in wetland habitats, including swamps, marshes, and along the edges of streams. Florida Cacalia can reach a height of 1 to 2 meters, exhibiting an upright, clumping growth form. The plant has a robust stem that supports a dense arrangement of large, lanceolate to ovate leaves, which can measure up to 30 centimeters in length. The leaves are often dark green and have a slightly glossy appearance, with a prominent midrib and serrated margins.

The flowering period of Arnoglossum floridanum occurs from late spring to early summer, during which it produces distinctive inflorescences. The flowers are borne in dense clusters, forming large, rounded heads that can be up to 15 centimeters in diameter. Each flower is small and tubular, typically yellowish to cream-colored, attracting various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Following the flowering stage, the plant produces elongated, slender fruits known as achenes, which are equipped with a tuft of fine hairs that facilitate wind dispersal.

Florida Cacalia plays a significant ecological role in its native habitat by providing food and habitat for a variety of wildlife, particularly pollinators. Additionally, the plant has been noted for its potential use in restoration projects aimed at wetland rehabilitation, given its ability to thrive in disturbed areas.
