This species typically inhabits disturbed sites, grasslands, and open forests, often thriving in well-drained soils. Douglas’ sagewort exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of 30 to 90 centimeters (approximately 12 to 35 inches), with a bushy and somewhat sprawling form. The stems are often covered in fine hairs, giving them a grayish-green appearance.
The leaves of Artemisia douglasiana are distinctive, being deeply lobed or dissected, and are typically covered with a fine layer of silvery hairs, which contribute to their aromatic quality when crushed.
