Also known as: Schaffner's Bahia
Bahia schaffneri, commonly known as Schaffner’s Bahia, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the central and southern regions of the United States, particularly found in states such as Texas and New Mexico. This species typically grows in open grasslands, prairies, and disturbed sites, thriving in well-drained soils. The growth habit of Schaffner’s Bahia can reach heights of approximately 30 to 90 centimeters (about 12 to 36 inches), exhibiting a clumping form with a robust structure that allows it to withstand varying environmental conditions.
The leaves of Bahia schaffneri are lanceolate to linear, measuring 5 to 15 centimeters in length, and are characterized by their green coloration and smooth margins. The flowering period occurs from late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces distinctive yellow flower heads that are arranged in loose clusters. Each flower head consists of numerous ray florets surrounding a central disc, contributing to its vibrant appearance. Following the flowering phase, the plant develops small, elongated achenes that serve as its fruit, facilitating seed dispersal by wind and animals.
Ecologically, Schaffner’s Bahia plays a significant role in its native habitat by providing nectar and pollen for various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Its ability to thrive in disturbed areas makes it a valuable species for habitat restoration and soil stabilization. Additionally, the plant is often used in native landscaping and prairie restoration projects due to its adaptability and resilience. An interesting adaptation of Bahia schaffneri is its deep root system, which allows it to access moisture during dry periods, enhancing its survival in arid environments.
