Balsamorhiza careyana var.
Also known as: Carey's Balsamroot
Balsamorhiza careyana var. careyana, commonly known as Carey’s Balsamroot, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, primarily found in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. This species typically inhabits open, dry habitats such as grasslands, sagebrush steppe, and rocky slopes, often thriving in well-drained soils. The growth habit of Carey’s Balsamroot can reach heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters (12 to 24 inches), exhibiting a rosette form with a stout, unbranched stem that supports its flowering head.
The leaves of Balsamorhiza careyana var. careyana are large, lanceolate to ovate in shape, and can grow up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) long. They are covered with a dense layer of woolly hairs, which helps reduce water loss and provides some protection from herbivory. The plant produces striking yellow flower heads, typically blooming from April to June, with each head containing numerous ray florets that attract various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. The fruit is a small, elongated achene, which is dispersed by wind and animals, aiding in the plant’s reproduction and spread.
Ecologically, Carey’s Balsamroot plays a significant role in its native habitat by providing food resources for pollinators and serving as a pioneer species that stabilizes soil in disturbed areas. The plant has adapted to its environment with a deep taproot that allows it to access moisture and nutrients from deeper soil layers, making it resilient in drought conditions. Additionally, its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils contributes to the overall biodiversity of the ecosystems it inhabits. While primarily valued for its ecological contributions, Carey’s Balsamroot is also appreciated in horticulture for its ornamental qualities and is sometimes used in restoration projects to enhance native plant communities.
