Fassett’s Water-starwort

Callitriche fassettii, commonly known as Fassett’s Water-starwort, is a perennial aquatic plant native to the northeastern United States and parts of Canada. It typically grows in shallow waters, reaching heights of 10 to 30 cm, and forms dense mats that can cover large areas of wetlands, ponds, and slow-moving streams. The plant is characterized by its slender, submerged stems and small, lanceolate leaves that are arranged in whorls. The flowers are inconspicuous, usually appearing in the summer, and are borne in clusters above the water surface, followed by small, elongated fruits that contain seeds adapted for water dispersal.

This species plays a significant ecological role by providing habitat and food for various aquatic organisms, including fish and invertebrates. Its growth habit helps stabilize sediment and improve water quality by absorbing excess nutrients. While Fassett’s Water-starwort is not widely utilized by humans, it can be important in ecological restoration projects aimed at enhancing wetland habitats.
