Arabis holboellii var.
Also known as: Collins' Rockcress
Arabis holboellii var. collinsii, commonly known as Collins’ Rockcress, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Brassicaceae family. This variety is native to the western United States, particularly found in the mountainous regions of the Pacific Northwest, including areas of Oregon and Washington. It typically grows in rocky, well-drained soils, often in alpine or subalpine habitats, where it can thrive in full sun to partial shade. The plant generally reaches a height of 10 to 30 centimeters, exhibiting a compact and low-growing form that allows it to withstand harsh environmental conditions.
The leaves of Collins’ Rockcress are basal and lanceolate, with a smooth or slightly hairy texture, and they are arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant. The flowering period occurs in spring to early summer, during which the plant produces clusters of small, four-petaled white to pale yellow flowers that are approximately 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter. These flowers are borne on slender racemes, attracting various pollinators, including bees. Following the flowering stage, the plant develops elongated, slender siliques (seed pods) that can reach up to 4 centimeters in length, containing several small seeds that are dispersed by wind or water.
Collins’ Rockcress plays an important ecological role in its native habitat, contributing to soil stabilization and providing food resources for pollinators. The species has adaptations that allow it to survive in nutrient-poor and rocky substrates, including a deep taproot system that helps it access moisture and nutrients. Additionally, its low growth habit minimizes damage from wind and reduces water loss, making it well-suited for its alpine environment. While Collins’ Rockcress is not widely cultivated for human use, it may be appreciated in rock gardens or as part of native plant landscaping due to its resilience and attractive flowers.
