Macoun’s Rockcress

Arabis microphylla var. macounii, commonly known as Macoun’s Rockcress, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the alpine and subalpine regions of western North America, particularly found in areas such as British Columbia, Alberta, and the northern United States. This variety typically grows in rocky, well-drained soils, often in association with other alpine flora. The growth habit of Macoun’s Rockcress is characterized by its low, mat-forming stature, generally reaching heights of 10 to 30 centimeters. The form is compact, with a rosette of basal leaves from which flowering stems arise.

The leaves of Macoun’s Rockcress are small, typically measuring 1 to 3 centimeters in length, and are often spoon-shaped or lanceolate, with a smooth or slightly hairy texture. The flowers are notable for their delicate appearance, usually arranged in racemes, with four white to pale pink petals that are approximately 1 to 2 centimeters across. Flowering occurs in late spring to early summer, attracting various pollinators. The fruit is a slender, elongated silique that can reach up to 5 centimeters in length, containing several seeds that are dispersed by wind or water.

Ecologically, Macoun’s Rockcress plays a role in stabilizing soil in its native habitat, helping to prevent erosion in rocky environments. It is also a part of the alpine ecosystem, contributing to the biodiversity and serving as a food source for certain herbivores. This species exhibits adaptations to its harsh environment, such as a deep root system that allows it to access moisture and nutrients in rocky substrates, as well as a growth form that minimizes exposure to strong winds and extreme temperatures.
