Also known as: Boundary Peak Rockcress
Arabis pinzliae, commonly known as Boundary Peak Rockcress, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Brassicaceae family. This species is native to the alpine regions of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in eastern California and western Nevada, particularly around the Boundary Peak area. It typically grows in rocky, well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 2,500 to 3,400 meters (8,200 to 11,200 feet). The growth habit of Arabis pinzliae is characterized by its low, mat-forming structure, reaching heights of approximately 10 to 30 centimeters (4 to 12 inches), which allows it to withstand harsh alpine conditions.
The leaves of Boundary Peak Rockcress are lanceolate to ovate, with a rosette formation at the base. They are generally glabrous or slightly hairy, exhibiting a green to gray-green coloration. The flowering period occurs in late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces small, four-petaled white to pale yellow flowers arranged in racemes. Each flower measures about 1 to 2 centimeters (0.4 to 0.8 inches) in diameter and is characterized by its elongated, slender pedicels. Following the flowering stage, the plant develops elongated siliques, which are the fruiting bodies containing seeds that are dispersed by wind or water, aiding in the plant’s reproduction in its challenging habitat.
Ecologically, Arabis pinzliae plays a role in stabilizing soil in its native alpine environment, contributing to the overall health of the ecosystem by preventing erosion. It can also serve as a food source for various pollinators, such as bees, during its flowering period. This species has adapted to its high-elevation habitat through its compact growth form and the ability to thrive in nutrient-poor, rocky substrates, demonstrating resilience in extreme weather conditions. The unique adaptations of Boundary Peak Rockcress make it an important component of the alpine flora in its native range.
