Also known as: Selby's Rockcress
Arabis selbyi, commonly known as Selby’s Rockcress, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, particularly found in the mountainous regions of California and Oregon. This species typically grows in rocky, well-drained soils, often in alpine or subalpine environments. The growth habit of Arabis selbyi is characterized by a compact form, reaching heights of approximately 15 to 30 centimeters. The plant often forms dense mats or clumps, which help it stabilize in its often harsh and exposed habitats.
The leaves of Arabis selbyi are basal and lanceolate, with a smooth or slightly hairy texture, arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant. The flowering period occurs in the spring, during which the plant produces small, white to pale pink flowers that are arranged in racemes. Each flower typically has four petals, characteristic of the Brassicaceae family, and is about 1 to 2 centimeters in diameter. Following the flowering stage, the plant develops elongated siliques, which are the fruiting bodies that contain the seeds, facilitating dispersal by wind or water.
Selby’s Rockcress plays a significant ecological role in its native habitats, contributing to soil stabilization and providing food sources for various pollinators, including bees. Its adaptations to rocky environments include a deep root system that allows it to access moisture and nutrients in nutrient-poor soils, as well as its ability to withstand cold temperatures and strong winds. While Arabis selbyi is not widely cultivated for human use, it may be of interest in rock gardens and for conservation efforts aimed at preserving native flora in its native range.
