Bigelow’s Amaranth

Amaranthus bigelovii, commonly known as Bigelow’s Amaranth, is a flowering plant species in the Amaranthaceae family, native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It typically inhabits disturbed areas, such as roadsides and open fields, where it thrives in well-drained soils. This annual herbaceous plant exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of 30 to 90 centimeters, with a somewhat upright form that allows it to compete effectively for light and resources in its environment.

The leaves of Bigelow’s Amaranth are alternate, ovate to lanceolate in shape, and can measure up to 10 centimeters in length. They are characterized by their smooth margins and a slightly hairy texture on the upper surface, while the underside may display a more pronounced pubescence. The flowering period occurs in late summer to early fall, producing dense, elongated clusters of small, greenish to reddish flowers that are borne in axillary and terminal racemes. The flowers are typically wind-pollinated and develop into small, dry, indehiscent fruits known as achenes, which are dispersed by wind and water, facilitating the plant’s spread in its native range.

Ecologically, Amaranthus bigelovii plays a role in local ecosystems as a pioneer species, contributing to soil stabilization and providing habitat for various insects and wildlife. It is also noted for its potential uses in traditional medicine and as a food source; the seeds are edible and rich in protein, making them a valuable resource in some indigenous diets.
