Mediterranean Amaranth

Amaranthus graecizans, commonly known as Mediterranean Amaranth, is a species native to the Mediterranean region, extending its range across parts of Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. This annual herb typically reaches heights of 30 to 100 centimeters, exhibiting an erect growth habit with a branching form. The stems are often reddish or green, and the plant may display a bushy appearance depending on environmental conditions and competition with neighboring flora.

The leaves of A. graecizans are alternate, ovate to lanceolate in shape, measuring between 5 to 10 centimeters in length. They are characterized by a smooth margin and a glossy green surface, often with a slightly hairy underside. The inflorescences are dense, terminal or axillary clusters of small, greenish flowers that can appear in summer and early fall. The flowers are typically unisexual, with male and female flowers occurring on the same plant. Following flowering, the plant produces small, dark brown to black seeds that are dispersed by wind or water, contributing to its propagation in suitable habitats.

Ecologically, Mediterranean Amaranth plays a role in stabilizing soil and providing food for various herbivores and pollinators.
