Watson’s Amaranth

Amaranthus watsonii, commonly known as Watson’s Amaranth, is a species native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. This plant typically inhabits disturbed areas, such as roadsides and open fields, and is often found in arid and semi-arid regions. Watson’s Amaranth exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of 30 to 100 centimeters (approximately 12 to 39 inches). The plant has an upright form, with a branching structure that can vary depending on environmental conditions.

The leaves of Amaranthus watsonii are lanceolate to ovate, measuring between 5 to 15 centimeters in length, and are characterized by a smooth margin and a deep green color. The inflorescences are dense, erect, and typically consist of small, greenish flowers that can appear in clusters. These flowers are wind-pollinated and are notable for their ability to produce a large number of seeds, which are small and dark, facilitating dispersal by wind and water.
