Also known as: Sanddollar

Astrophytum asterias, commonly known as the Sanddollar cactus, is a species of cactus native to the arid regions of northeastern Mexico, particularly in the states of San Luis Potosí and Nuevo León. This plant typically exhibits a low, globular growth habit, reaching heights of 5 to 15 centimeters and diameters of 10 to 20 centimeters. The Sanddollar cactus is characterized by its distinctive, flattened shape that resembles a sand dollar, with a smooth, grayish-green to blue-green epidermis. It usually features five to seven prominent ribs that are adorned with small, white, star-like tubercles, which contribute to its unique appearance.

The flowers of Astrophytum asterias are another notable feature, emerging from the apex of the plant during the warmer months, typically in late spring to early summer. These flowers are funnel-shaped, measuring about 5 to 8 centimeters in diameter, and can be yellow, cream, or occasionally orange in color, often with a darker center. Following flowering, the cactus produces small, spiny fruits that contain seeds, which are dispersed by wind or animals. Ecologically, Sanddollar cacti play a role in their native habitats by providing food and shelter for various insects and small animals, while also contributing to soil stabilization in their often sandy environments.

Astrophytum asterias exhibits several interesting adaptations to its desert habitat. Its smooth surface and reduced leaf structures minimize water loss, allowing it to thrive in conditions with limited moisture. The plant is also capable of photosynthesis through its stem, which is a common adaptation among cacti. Additionally, its ability to store water in its tissues enables it to survive prolonged periods of drought. Due to its unique appearance and relatively low maintenance requirements, Sanddollar cactus has gained popularity in horticulture and is often cultivated as an ornamental plant in gardens and collections.
