King’s Compact Sandwort

Arenaria kingii ssp. compacta, commonly known as King’s Compact Sandwort, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the mountainous regions of the western United States, particularly found in areas such as the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. This subspecies typically grows in well-drained, sandy or rocky soils at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. It exhibits a compact growth habit, usually reaching a height of about 10 to 30 centimeters, with a low, mat-forming form that allows it to thrive in harsh alpine environments.

The leaves of King’s Compact Sandwort are narrow, linear, and often glaucous, measuring approximately 2 to 5 centimeters in length. They are arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant, contributing to its dense appearance. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are small and white, typically with five petals, and are borne in loose clusters atop slender stems. The fruit is a capsule that contains several seeds, which are dispersed by wind or water, aiding in the plant’s propagation in its native habitat.

Ecologically, Arenaria kingii ssp. compacta plays a significant role in stabilizing soil in its native alpine ecosystems, helping to prevent erosion in areas with challenging growing conditions. Its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils and withstand extreme temperatures is a notable adaptation, allowing it to occupy niches that many other species cannot.
