Also known as: Maritime Saltbush

Atriplex glabriuscula var. acadiensis, commonly known as Maritime Saltbush, is a variety of the broader species Atriplex glabriuscula, which belongs to the Amaranthaceae family. This plant is native to the coastal regions of northeastern North America, particularly found in areas such as the Maritime provinces of Canada, including Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, as well as parts of the northeastern United States. Maritime Saltbush typically grows in saline or brackish habitats, often in coastal salt marshes, dunes, and disturbed areas where soil salinity is elevated.

The growth habit of Maritime Saltbush is characterized by its low, spreading form, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant exhibits a bushy appearance with numerous branches that can spread outwards, forming dense mats. The leaves are distinctive, typically lanceolate to ovate in shape, and are covered with a fine layer of grayish-green to silvery scales, which help reduce water loss and provide some protection against herbivory. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, borne in clusters, and are primarily wind-pollinated. The fruit is a small, dry achene that contains one seed, which is adapted for dispersal by wind and water.

Maritime Saltbush plays an important ecological role in its native habitat by stabilizing soil and providing a habitat for various coastal organisms. It is particularly well adapted to saline environments, possessing specialized salt-excreting glands that allow it to thrive in conditions that would be inhospitable to many other plant species. This adaptation not only enables the plant to survive in high salinity but also contributes to the overall health of coastal ecosystems by enhancing soil structure and preventing erosion. Additionally, Maritime Saltbush can be utilized in restoration projects aimed at rehabilitating disturbed coastal areas due to its resilience and ability to tolerate harsh conditions.
