Powell’s Saltweed

Atriplex powellii, commonly known as Powell’s Saltweed, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Amaranthaceae family. This species is native to the arid regions of the western United States, particularly found in states such as Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. It typically inhabits saline and alkaline soils, often thriving in disturbed areas, salt flats, and along the edges of ephemeral water bodies. The growth habit of Powell’s Saltweed is characterized by its erect form, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 90 centimeters. The plant often exhibits a bushy appearance, with multiple stems arising from a central base.

The leaves of Atriplex powellii are lanceolate to ovate, measuring 2 to 8 centimeters in length, and are often covered with a distinctive grayish-green to silver coating of fine hairs, which helps to reduce water loss in its arid environment. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, typically clustered in axillary or terminal spikes, and are wind-pollinated. The fruit is a small, membranous capsule that contains one or more seeds, which are dispersed by wind or water.
