Mojave Sand Verbena

Abronia pogonantha, commonly known as Mojave Sand Verbena, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States, particularly found in the Mojave Desert of California, Nevada, and Arizona. This species typically thrives in sandy or gravelly soils, often in open areas where it can receive full sunlight. The growth habit of Mojave Sand Verbena generally reaches a height of 15 to 30 centimeters (6 to 12 inches), forming a low, spreading mat that can cover substantial ground. The plant has a prostrate to ascending form, allowing it to adapt well to its harsh desert environment.

The leaves of Abronia pogonantha are small, linear to lanceolate, and can be up to 5 centimeters (2 inches) long, often covered with fine hairs that help reduce water loss. The flowers are one of the most notable characteristics of this species, forming dense clusters of tubular blooms that are typically pink to lavender in color.
