Alpine Bearberry

Arctostaphylos alpina var. alpina, commonly known as Alpine Bearberry, is a perennial shrub native to the alpine and subalpine regions of North America, particularly found in the western United States and Canada. This variety typically thrives in rocky, well-drained soils at high elevations, often colonizing areas with poor nutrient availability. The growth habit of Alpine Bearberry is low and spreading, usually reaching heights of 10 to 30 centimeters (4 to 12 inches), with a prostrate form that allows it to withstand harsh environmental conditions.

The leaves of Alpine Bearberry are evergreen, leathery, and oval-shaped, measuring approximately 1 to 3 centimeters (0.4 to 1.2 inches) in length. They are typically dark green on the upper surface and lighter underneath, which helps to reduce water loss in the harsh alpine climate. In spring, the plant produces clusters of small, urn-shaped flowers that are white to pink in color, attracting various pollinators such as bees. These flowers give way to small, fleshy berries that ripen to a reddish hue in late summer and fall, providing a food source for birds and other wildlife. The berries are also edible for humans, although they are often considered to have a bland flavor.
