Also known as: Coastal Wattle

Acacia cyclops, commonly known as Coastal Wattle, is a species of flowering plant in the family Fabaceae, native to the southern regions of Australia, particularly along the coastline of Western Australia. This species typically grows as a shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 2 to 8 meters. It has a dense, bushy form with a rounded crown, making it an effective windbreak in coastal areas. The bark is rough and dark gray, while the branchlets are often covered with fine hairs, contributing to its overall texture.

The leaves of Acacia cyclops are phyllodes, which are flattened petioles that take on a leaf-like appearance. These phyllodes are linear to slightly curved, measuring 5 to 15 cm in length and 1 to 2 cm in width, with a glossy green color that helps to reduce water loss. The plant produces bright yellow, ball-shaped flower heads that bloom in clusters, typically from late winter to early spring, attracting various pollinators, including bees. Following flowering, the species produces flat, curved pods that can reach up to 10 cm in length, containing several seeds that are dispersed by wind and water.

Ecologically, Acacia cyclops plays a significant role in stabilizing sandy soils and preventing erosion along coastal dunes. It is often used in land reclamation projects and as an ornamental plant due to its attractive flowers and ability to thrive in poor soil conditions. Additionally, the species has adaptations that allow it to survive in harsh coastal environments, including a deep root system that accesses groundwater and the ability to fix nitrogen, enhancing soil fertility. Its resilience to salt spray and drought conditions further contributes to its success in its native habitat.
