Albizia lebbeck, commonly known as Woman's Tongue, is a species of flowering tree in the family Fabaceae.
Also known as: Woman's Tongue
Albizia lebbeck, commonly known as Woman’s Tongue, is a species of flowering tree in the family Fabaceae. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Australia, with its range extending from India to Myanmar and across the Indian Ocean to Madagascar and the islands of the Pacific. This tree typically grows to a height of 10 to 20 meters (approximately 33 to 66 feet) and exhibits a broad, spreading crown, which can reach up to 15 meters (49 feet) in width. The trunk is often straight and can be quite robust, with a diameter of up to 1 meter (3.3 feet).
The leaves of Albizia lebbeck are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that give the foliage a feathery appearance. The leaflets are typically 2 to 5 cm long and are arranged in pairs along the leaf stem. The tree produces showy, fragrant flowers that are borne in dense, spherical clusters, predominantly in the summer months. These flowers are usually creamy white to pale yellow and are notable for their long, protruding stamens, which create a striking visual effect. Following flowering, the tree produces flat, elongated pods that can be up to 15 cm (6 inches) long, containing several seeds. These pods turn brown as they mature and eventually dehisce to release the seeds.
Albizia lebbeck plays an important ecological role as a nitrogen-fixing species, enriching the soil in which it grows and promoting biodiversity in its habitat. It is often used in agroforestry systems and as a shade tree in urban environments. The tree’s wood is lightweight and has various applications, including furniture making and fuel. Additionally, the bark and leaves have been utilized in traditional medicine for their purported health benefits. An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to tolerate a range of soil types and conditions, including drought, which enhances its resilience and makes it suitable for cultivation in diverse environments.
