Also known as: Indian Albizia
Albizia lebbekoides, commonly known as Indian Albizia, is a species of flowering tree belonging to the family Fabaceae. It is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, particularly found in countries such as Senegal, Nigeria, and Sudan, and has been introduced to other regions, including parts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. This tree typically reaches a height of 10 to 20 meters, exhibiting a broad, spreading crown that can create a significant canopy. The trunk is generally straight and can grow up to 60 centimeters in diameter.
The leaves of Albizia lebbekoides are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are arranged in a feathery pattern, which gives the foliage a delicate appearance. The tree produces striking, fragrant flowers that are typically pink or white, arranged in dense, globular heads, attracting a variety of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Following the flowering period, the tree bears elongated, flat pods that contain several seeds, which are dispersed by wind and animals. This species plays an important ecological role by providing shade and habitat for various wildlife, and it is also used in agroforestry systems for its ability to improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation.
Indian Albizia is valued for its timber, which is used in construction and furniture making, and its bark is sometimes utilized for medicinal purposes. The tree is also planted for ornamental purposes due to its attractive foliage and flowers. An interesting adaptation of Albizia lebbekoides is its ability to thrive in a variety of soil types, including those that are poor in nutrients, making it a resilient species in disturbed habitats. Additionally, its rapid growth rate allows it to quickly establish itself in new areas, contributing to soil stabilization and reforestation efforts.
