Also known as: Tall Albizia
Albizia procera, commonly known as Tall Albizia, is a species of flowering tree belonging to the family Fabaceae. It is native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, as well as parts of Southeast Asia, including countries like India, Myanmar, and Thailand. This species typically grows to a height of 15 to 30 meters, exhibiting a broad, spreading crown that can reach up to 20 meters in diameter. The growth habit is characterized by a straight trunk and a dense canopy, which provides significant shade.
The leaves of Albizia procera are pinnate, with each leaf composed of numerous small leaflets, giving the foliage a feathery appearance. The flowers are particularly notable, appearing in clusters and exhibiting a creamy white to pale yellow color, with long, protruding stamens that create a fluffy appearance. These flowers are typically fragrant and attract various pollinators, including bees. The fruit is a flat, elongated pod that can grow up to 20 centimeters in length, containing several seeds that are dispersed when the pods mature and dehisce.
Ecologically, Tall Albizia plays a significant role in its native habitats by providing food and shelter for various wildlife species. Its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil enhances soil fertility, making it beneficial for agricultural practices. In terms of human uses, the timber of Albizia procera is valued for its strength and is often used in construction, furniture making, and for fuel. Additionally, the tree has been utilized in traditional medicine for its various properties. An interesting adaptation of this species is its ability to thrive in a range of soil types, including poor and degraded soils, which allows it to colonize disturbed areas effectively.
