Peanut

Arachis hypogaea, commonly known as the peanut, is a leguminous plant native to South America, particularly in regions such as Brazil and Paraguay. It has been cultivated for thousands of years and is now grown in various tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The growth habit of the peanut plant typically reaches a height of 30 to 50 centimeters, exhibiting a sprawling or bushy form. The stems are often prostrate, allowing the plant to spread across the ground, which aids in its ability to compete with weeds.

The leaves of Arachis hypogaea are compound, comprising four leaflets arranged in a distinctive arrangement that resembles a hand. The flowers are small, yellow to orange in color, and are borne on short stalks above the foliage. Notably, after fertilization, the flower stalk elongates and bends, allowing the developing fruit, or peanut pods, to grow underground. Each pod usually contains one to four seeds, which are the edible peanuts. This unique trait of geocarpy, where the fruit develops below ground, is a significant adaptation that protects the seeds from herbivores and environmental stress.

Ecologically, peanuts play a vital role in soil health as they are nitrogen-fixing plants, enriching the soil with nitrogen through symbiotic relationships with rhizobia bacteria. This makes them beneficial in crop rotation systems. Human uses of Arachis hypogaea are extensive; peanuts are consumed in various forms, including roasted, boiled, and as peanut butter, and they are also used in cooking oils and snacks. Additionally, peanut meal and oil are important in animal feed and food production. The plant’s ability to thrive in poor soils and its nutritional value contribute to its significance in agriculture and food security.
