Also known as: Clokey's Milkvetch
Astragalus aequalis, commonly known as Clokey’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is native to the western United States, particularly found in the mountainous regions of Colorado and Wyoming. It typically inhabits rocky slopes and open meadows at elevations ranging from 2,500 to 3,500 meters. Clokey’s Milkvetch exhibits a growth habit characterized by a height of approximately 20 to 50 centimeters, forming a compact, upright clump with a somewhat bushy appearance.
The leaves of Astragalus aequalis are pinnately compound, usually comprising 7 to 15 leaflets that are narrow and elongated, giving them a feathery appearance. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are arranged in dense racemes and display a distinctive pale yellow to cream coloration, often with purplish markings. Each flower has a typical legume structure, featuring a banner, wings, and a keel, which are characteristic of the Fabaceae family. Following the flowering period, the plant produces elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds, which are adapted for wind dispersal.
Clokey’s Milkvetch plays a significant ecological role in its native habitat, contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for various herbivores. As a member of the legume family, it has the ability to fix nitrogen in the soil through a symbiotic relationship with rhizobia, enhancing soil fertility and supporting surrounding plant communities. This species is also of interest for its potential use in restoration ecology, particularly in disturbed areas where soil improvement is necessary. Notably, Astragalus aequalis has adaptations to withstand harsh alpine conditions, including a deep root system that allows it to access moisture and nutrients in rocky substrates, as well as a growth form that minimizes exposure to wind and cold temperatures.
