Gumbo Milkvetch

Astragalus ampullarius, commonly known as Gumbo Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. This species is native to the southwestern United States, particularly found in regions such as New Mexico and Texas. It typically inhabits arid and semi-arid environments, often growing in sandy or loamy soils, which are characteristic of its native range. Gumbo Milkvetch exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of up to 30 centimeters (approximately 12 inches) and generally forms a low, spreading mat.

The leaves of Astragalus ampullarius are pinnately compound, consisting of several leaflets that are narrow and linear, which helps reduce water loss in its dry habitat.
