Astragalus anisus, commonly known as Gunnison Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Fabaceae family.
Also known as: Gunnison Milkvetch
Astragalus anisus, commonly known as Gunnison Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. This species is native to the western United States, particularly found in the mountainous regions of Colorado and Utah. It typically thrives in well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 2,500 to 3,600 meters, often in rocky or disturbed areas. The growth habit of Astragalus anisus is characterized by its erect form, reaching heights of approximately 15 to 45 centimeters. The plant often develops a bushy appearance due to its multiple stems arising from a central crown.
The leaves of Gunnison Milkvetch are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are linear to lanceolate in shape, which helps reduce water loss in its native alpine environment. The flowers are a notable feature, appearing in clusters and exhibiting a typical legume morphology with a pale yellow to cream coloration, often with purple markings. Flowering generally occurs from late spring to early summer, attracting various pollinators, including bees. Following the flowering period, the plant produces elongated, hairy pods that contain several seeds, which are adapted for wind dispersal.
Ecologically, Astragalus anisus plays a significant role in its habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for herbivores. The plant is also known for its nitrogen-fixing capabilities, which enhance soil fertility and support surrounding vegetation. Interestingly, like many members of the Astragalus genus, Gunnison Milkvetch has developed adaptations to thrive in its harsh alpine environment, including a deep taproot system that allows it to access moisture and nutrients from deeper soil layers. This resilience makes it an important species for maintaining ecosystem health in its native range.
