Astragalus atratus var. owyheensis
Astragalus atratus var.
Also known as: Owyhee Milkvetch
Astragalus atratus var. owyheensis, commonly known as Owyhee Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the arid regions of the western United States, particularly found in parts of Idaho and Oregon. This variety typically grows in rocky, well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,500 meters. The growth habit of Owyhee Milkvetch is characterized by a low, spreading form, with individual plants reaching heights of approximately 15 to 30 centimeters. The stems are often erect and can be somewhat woody at the base, contributing to a bushy appearance.
The leaves of Owyhee Milkvetch are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are generally linear to lanceolate in shape, providing a fine texture to the foliage. The flowers, which bloom in late spring to early summer, are typically purple to lavender in color and are arranged in dense racemes. Each flower features the distinctive papilionaceous structure common to the Fabaceae family, with a prominent banner petal and two wing petals. The fruit is a legume, forming elongated pods that contain several seeds, which are dispersed when the pods dehisce. This species plays an important ecological role in its habitat, serving as a nitrogen-fixing plant that enhances soil fertility and provides food for various pollinators.
Owyhee Milkvetch exhibits several adaptations that allow it to thrive in its harsh, arid environment. Its deep root system enables it to access moisture from deeper soil layers, while its ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen helps it to survive in nutrient-poor soils. Additionally, the plant’s foliage is often covered with fine hairs, which may reduce water loss and provide some protection from herbivory. This combination of traits not only supports its survival but also contributes to the ecological health of the communities in which it resides.
