Weiser’s Milkvetch

Astragalus beckwithii var. weiserensis, commonly known as Weiser’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, primarily found in Idaho and parts of surrounding states. This variety typically inhabits dry, rocky soils in open grasslands and sagebrush steppe ecosystems, often at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,500 meters. The growth habit of Weiser’s Milkvetch is characterized by its erect form, reaching heights between 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant often exhibits a bushy appearance due to its multiple stems arising from a central crown.

The leaves of Weiser’s Milkvetch are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are linear to lanceolate in shape, contributing to its distinctive foliage. The flowering period occurs in late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces clusters of small, pealike flowers that are typically purple to lavender in color. These flowers are arranged in racemes and are an important source of nectar for pollinators. Following flowering, the plant develops elongated, flattened legumes that contain seeds, which are dispersed by various means, including wind and animal activity.

Ecologically, Weiser’s Milkvetch plays a significant role in its habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for herbivores. It is also a nitrogen-fixing species, which enhances soil fertility and supports surrounding plant communities.
