Astragalus bisulcatus var. nevadensis
Astragalus bisulcatus var.
Also known as: Nevada Milkvetch
Astragalus bisulcatus var. nevadensis, commonly known as Nevada Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This variety is native to the western United States, particularly found in the mountainous regions of Nevada, as well as parts of California and Utah. It typically thrives in well-drained soils, often in rocky or sandy substrates at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 3,000 meters. The plant exhibits a growth habit characterized by a height of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters, with a bushy form that allows it to withstand the harsh conditions of its native habitat.
The leaves of Nevada Milkvetch are pinnately compound, usually consisting of 5 to 15 leaflets that are narrow and lanceolate in shape, providing a feathery appearance. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are typically purple to lavender in color and are arranged in racemes. Each flower is about 1 to 2 centimeters in length and is notable for its distinctive banner, wings, and keel, which are characteristic of the genus Astragalus. Following the flowering period, the plant produces elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds, which are adapted to disperse in the wind or through animal activity.
Ecologically, Nevada Milkvetch plays a significant role in its environment by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for various herbivores, including livestock and wildlife. The species is also known for its nitrogen-fixing capabilities, which enhance soil fertility and benefit surrounding plant communities. An interesting adaptation of this plant is its ability to tolerate drought conditions, allowing it to survive in arid environments where water availability is limited. This resilience is facilitated by a deep root system that can access moisture from deeper soil layers, making it well-suited for its native range.
