Also known as: Case's Milkvetch
Astragalus casei, commonly known as Case’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is native to the western United States, primarily found in the Rocky Mountain region, including areas of Colorado and Wyoming. It typically inhabits dry, rocky soils, often in open grasslands or sagebrush communities, where it can thrive in well-drained conditions. The growth habit of Astragalus casei generally reaches heights of 30 to 60 centimeters, exhibiting a bushy form with multiple stems arising from a central crown.
The leaves of Case’s Milkvetch are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are typically linear to lanceolate in shape, providing a feathery appearance. The flowering period occurs in late spring to early summer, during which the plant produces clusters of distinctive, tubular flowers that are usually purple to lavender in color. The flowers are adapted for pollination by various insects, particularly bees. Following the flowering phase, the plant develops elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds, which are dispersed when the pods mature and split open.
Ecologically, Astragalus casei plays a significant role in its native habitat, contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for herbivores. As a member of the legume family, it is also capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen, enriching the soil and benefiting surrounding plant communities. Additionally, this species may have potential uses in restoration ecology, particularly in efforts to rehabilitate disturbed lands. Adaptations such as a deep root system allow it to access moisture and nutrients from deeper soil layers, enabling it to survive in arid environments.
