Chestnut Milkvetch

Astragalus castaneiformis, commonly known as Chestnut Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is native to the western United States, particularly found in regions such as the Rocky Mountains and surrounding areas, where it typically thrives in dry, rocky soils at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. The growth habit of Chestnut Milkvetch is characterized by its upright form, reaching heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant often exhibits a bushy appearance, with multiple stems arising from a central crown.

The leaves of Astragalus castaneiformis are pinnately compound, generally consisting of 7 to 15 leaflets that are narrow and elongated, giving them a distinctive feather-like appearance. The flowers are notable for their unique morphology, typically appearing in clusters and displaying shades of purple to violet. Each flower has a characteristic shape, with a prominent banner petal that is broader than the wings and keel, which aids in attracting pollinators.
