Astragalus cobrensis var. cobrensis
Astragalus cobrensis var.
Also known as: Copper Mine Milkvetch
Astragalus cobrensis var. cobrensis, commonly known as Copper Mine Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southwestern United States, particularly found in the copper-rich soils of Arizona. This variety typically grows in rocky, well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,400 meters. The growth habit of Copper Mine Milkvetch is characterized by its erect to ascending stems, which can reach a height of 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant often exhibits a bushy form, with multiple stems arising from a central base, contributing to its dense appearance.
The leaves of Astragalus cobrensis var. cobrensis are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are typically ovate to elliptical in shape. They are arranged in a rosette at the base and along the stems, providing a lush green appearance. The flowers are a notable feature of this species, presenting in clusters and displaying a distinctive purple to lavender hue, often with a characteristic yellowish tinge on the banner petal. The flowering period generally occurs in late spring to early summer, attracting various pollinators such as bees. Following the flowering stage, the plant produces elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds, which are adapted for dispersal by wind and animals.
Ecologically, Copper Mine Milkvetch plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for herbivores. It is particularly adapted to thrive in heavy metal-rich soils, which can be toxic to many other plant species. This adaptation allows it to occupy ecological niches that would otherwise remain barren, thus enhancing biodiversity in disturbed or marginal areas. Additionally, the plant has been studied for its potential use in phytoremediation, as it can accumulate heavy metals, making it a candidate for rehabilitating contaminated sites.
