Astragalus cobrensis var. maguirei
Astragalus cobrensis var.
Also known as: Maguire's Milkvetch
Astragalus cobrensis var. maguirei, commonly known as Maguire’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the southwestern United States, specifically found in the region of the Coconino Plateau in northern Arizona. This variety typically grows in rocky, well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 meters. The growth habit of Maguire’s Milkvetch can reach heights of 30 to 60 centimeters, exhibiting a bushy form with multiple stems that arise from a central crown. The plant often forms dense clumps, contributing to its overall robustness.
The leaves of Maguire’s Milkvetch are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that give them a feathery appearance. The leaflets are generally linear to elliptical, measuring about 1 to 3 centimeters in length, and are covered with fine hairs that may help reduce water loss. The flowers are typically borne in racemes, featuring purple to violet petals that are characteristic of the Fabaceae family. Each flower measures approximately 1 to 2 centimeters in length and is adapted for pollination by insects. Following the flowering period, the plant produces elongated, flat pods containing several seeds, which are dispersed by wind or animals.
Ecologically, Maguire’s Milkvetch plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for various herbivores. Its nitrogen-fixing ability enhances soil fertility, promoting a healthy ecosystem. While there are no widely recognized human uses for this specific variety, members of the Astragalus genus are often studied for their medicinal properties. An interesting adaptation of Maguire’s Milkvetch is its ability to thrive in arid conditions, which is facilitated by its deep root system that allows it to access moisture from deeper soil layers, making it well-suited for survival in its native environment.
