Also known as: Deane's Milkvetch
Astragalus deanei, commonly known as Deane’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is native to the southwestern United States, particularly found in the states of California and Nevada. It typically inhabits arid and semi-arid environments, often thriving in rocky or sandy soils at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 feet. Deane’s Milkvetch exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters (12 to 24 inches), with a bushy form characterized by multiple stems arising from a central base.
The leaves of Astragalus deanei are pinnately compound, featuring numerous small leaflets that are lanceolate to oblong in shape, giving the plant a feathery appearance. The flowers are one of the most notable characteristics, appearing in clusters and displaying a typical pea-like structure. They are usually purple to lavender in color, attracting various pollinators, including bees. Following the flowering period, the plant produces elongated, curved pods containing several seeds. These pods are often hairy and can be up to 5 centimeters long, aiding in seed dispersal through wind and animal interactions.
Ecologically, Deane’s Milkvetch plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and improving soil fertility through nitrogen fixation, a common trait among legumes. This species is also a food source for various herbivores and pollinators, establishing it as an integral part of the local ecosystem. Adaptations such as a deep root system enable the plant to access moisture in arid conditions, while its ability to thrive in nutrient-poor soils allows it to occupy ecological niches where other plants may struggle. Deane’s Milkvetch is not widely cultivated for human use but is appreciated in conservation efforts aimed at restoring native plant communities and supporting local wildlife.
