Debeque Milkvetch

Astragalus debequaeus, commonly known as Debeque Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant endemic to the western United States, particularly found in the state of Colorado. This species typically inhabits arid and semi-arid environments, often thriving in sandy or gravelly soils within foothill and high desert ecosystems. The growth habit of Astragalus debequaeus generally reaches heights of 30 to 60 centimeters (approximately 12 to 24 inches), exhibiting a bushy form with multiple stems arising from a central crown.

The leaves of Debeque Milkvetch are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that give the foliage a feathery appearance. The plant produces distinctive flowers, which are typically purple to lavender in color, arranged in racemes. These flowers are adapted for pollination by various insects, particularly bees, contributing to its ecological role as a nectar source. Following the flowering period, the plant develops elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds. These pods are characteristic of the genus Astragalus and can be an important food source for various wildlife species.
