Astragalus emoryanus var.

Also known as: Emory's Milkvetch

Astragalus emoryanus var. terlinguensis, commonly known as Emory’s Milkvetch, is a variety of the Emory’s milkvetch species that is native to the southwestern United States, particularly found in the Trans-Pecos region of Texas and extending into parts of northern Mexico. This perennial herbaceous plant typically grows in arid and semi-arid environments, often inhabiting rocky slopes, grasslands, and disturbed areas. The growth habit of Emory’s Milkvetch can reach heights of approximately 30 to 60 centimeters, exhibiting a sprawling or upright form depending on environmental conditions.

The leaves of Emory’s Milkvetch are pinnately compound, usually consisting of 10 to 20 leaflets that are narrow and linear, giving the foliage a delicate appearance. The flowers are a notable feature, appearing in clusters and characterized by their pea-like structure, typically exhibiting shades of purple to lavender. Flowering occurs primarily in the spring and early summer, attracting various pollinators. The fruit is a legume, which is elongated and contains several seeds, playing a role in seed dispersal and regeneration of the plant population.

Ecologically, Emory’s Milkvetch contributes to soil stabilization and serves as a food source for various herbivores, including insects and larger mammals. It is also a nitrogen-fixing species, enhancing soil fertility in its native habitats. The plant has adaptations to survive in its arid environment, including a deep root system that allows it to access moisture and a waxy leaf surface that reduces water loss. These adaptations enable Emory’s Milkvetch to thrive in challenging conditions, making it an important component of its ecosystem.
