Also known as: Gypsum Milkvetch
Astragalus gypsodes, commonly known as gypsum milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is native to the arid regions of the western United States, particularly found in areas with gypsum soils, such as parts of Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. Gypsum milkvetch typically exhibits a growth habit that ranges from 15 to 60 centimeters in height, forming a clumped or mat-like structure. Its stems are erect and may be somewhat hairy, contributing to its overall texture.
The leaves of Astragalus gypsodes are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are typically linear to lanceolate in shape. The flowers, which bloom in late spring to early summer, are arranged in dense racemes and are characterized by their distinctive purple to violet coloration, often with a lighter hue. The fruit is a legume, which is a type of pod that usually contains several seeds. These pods are typically flattened and can be hairy, aiding in seed dispersal by wind or animals.
Ecologically, gypsum milkvetch plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for various herbivores. The plant is adapted to thrive in nutrient-poor, dry environments, where it has developed a deep root system that allows it to access moisture from deeper soil layers. Additionally, as a member of the legume family, it has the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen through symbiotic relationships with rhizobia bacteria, enriching the soil and benefiting surrounding plant communities. This adaptation not only supports its survival in harsh conditions but also enhances the overall health of the ecosystem in which it resides.
Plant in well-drained soil. Water sparingly.
