Astragalus hornii, commonly known as Horn's Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae.

Also known as: Horn's Milkvetch

Astragalus hornii, commonly known as Horn’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is native to the western United States, particularly found in the mountainous regions of California and Oregon. It typically inhabits dry, rocky slopes and grasslands, thriving in well-drained soils at elevations ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 meters. Horn’s Milkvetch exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of 30 to 60 centimeters, forming a dense, low mound that contributes to its overall form.

The leaves of Astragalus hornii are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are lanceolate to ovate in shape, giving the plant a feathery appearance. The flowers are distinctive, borne in racemes, and display a typical legume structure with five petals, often ranging in color from pale purple to white. The flowering period generally occurs from late spring to early summer, attracting various pollinators. The fruit is a flattened pod, which contains several seeds; these pods mature and dehisce to release seeds, facilitating natural propagation.

Ecologically, Horn’s Milkvetch plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to soil stabilization and providing forage for herbivores. Its ability to fix nitrogen in the soil through symbiotic relationships with rhizobia bacteria enhances soil fertility, benefiting surrounding plant communities. Additionally, this species is adapted to withstand drought conditions, exhibiting deep taproots that allow it to access moisture from deeper soil layers. Horn’s Milkvetch is also of interest in restoration ecology, as it can be used to rehabilitate disturbed areas due to its resilience and ability to improve soil health.
