Bent Milkvetch

Astragalus inflexus, commonly known as Bent Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is native to the western United States, particularly found in regions such as the Great Basin and parts of the Rocky Mountains. It typically thrives in dry, rocky soils and can often be seen in open, disturbed areas, where it plays a role in soil stabilization and erosion control.

Bent Milkvetch exhibits a growth habit that can reach heights of 20 to 50 centimeters. The plant has a distinctive form characterized by its sprawling or upright stems, which may be slightly bent or twisted, hence the common name. The leaves are pinnately compound, consisting of numerous small leaflets that are oval to lanceolate in shape, contributing to the plant’s overall green foliage. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are small and typically arranged in dense clusters. They are usually purple to lavender in color, attracting various pollinators, including bees. Following flowering, the plant produces slender, curved pods that contain several seeds, which are dispersed by wind or animal activity.

Ecologically, Astragalus inflexus plays a significant role in its native habitat by contributing to nitrogen fixation, a process that enriches the soil and supports the growth of surrounding vegetation. The plant is also a food source for various herbivores, including insects and larger mammals.
