Broadleaf Milkvetch

Astragalus lentiginosus var. chartaceus, commonly known as Broadleaf Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the western United States, particularly found in regions such as the Great Basin and parts of the Rocky Mountains. This variety typically inhabits dry, rocky soils and is often associated with sagebrush ecosystems. The growth habit of Broadleaf Milkvetch varies, but it generally reaches heights of 30 to 60 centimeters. The plant exhibits a bushy form, with numerous stems that arise from a central base, creating a dense, leafy appearance.

The leaves of Astragalus lentiginosus var. chartaceus are pinnately compound, consisting of multiple leaflets that are broad and oval-shaped, which contribute to its common name. The flowers are distinctive, featuring clusters of purple to lavender blooms that are characteristic of the Fabaceae family. These flowers are typically borne in racemes and are important for attracting pollinators such as bees. Following the flowering period, the plant produces elongated, flattened pods that contain several seeds. These pods are often covered in fine hairs and can be slightly twisted, which aids in seed dispersal.
