Also known as: Lyall's Milkvetch
Astragalus lyallii, commonly known as Lyall’s Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the legume family, Fabaceae. This species is native to the mountainous regions of western North America, primarily found in the alpine and subalpine zones of the Rocky Mountains, particularly in areas of British Columbia, Alberta, and Montana. Lyall’s Milkvetch typically grows in well-drained soils, often in rocky or gravelly substrates, and is adapted to the harsh conditions of its native habitat.
The growth habit of Astragalus lyallii can reach heights of 20 to 50 centimeters, forming a low, spreading mat or clump. The leaves are pinnately compound, usually consisting of 7 to 15 leaflets that are lanceolate to elliptical in shape, with a smooth or slightly hairy texture. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are arranged in dense racemes and are typically purple to violet in color, with a distinctive banner petal that is often larger than the others. The fruit is a legume, which is a flattened pod that contains several seeds; these pods are usually hairy and can be slightly curved.
Ecologically, Astragalus lyallii plays a significant role in its environment by contributing to soil stability and providing habitat for various pollinators. The plant is also known for its nitrogen-fixing capabilities, which enhance soil fertility and promote the growth of surrounding flora. While it is not widely utilized in horticulture, it can be of interest for erosion control and restoration projects in alpine ecosystems. An interesting adaptation of Lyall’s Milkvetch is its ability to withstand extreme temperature fluctuations and low nutrient availability, traits that allow it to thrive in the challenging alpine conditions where it is found.
