Also known as: Chaco Milkvetch
Astragalus micromerius, commonly known as Chaco Milkvetch, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the Chaco region of South America, particularly found in parts of Argentina, Paraguay, and Bolivia. This species typically grows in arid and semi-arid environments, often in sandy or rocky soils. Chaco Milkvetch generally reaches a height of 30 to 60 centimeters, exhibiting a bushy form with multiple stems arising from a central crown. The plant’s growth habit allows it to adapt to its environment, providing stability in loose soils and resilience against drought conditions.
The leaves of Astragalus micromerius are pinnately compound, typically consisting of 10 to 15 leaflets that are narrow and elongated, contributing to its overall delicate appearance. The flowers are small, typically ranging in color from pale yellow to white, and are arranged in dense racemes that emerge from the leaf axils. Each flower features the characteristic papilionaceous structure common to the Fabaceae family, with a distinct banner, wings, and keel. Following the flowering period, the plant produces elongated, flattened legumes that contain several seeds, which are adapted for wind dispersal.
Chaco Milkvetch plays an important ecological role in its native habitat, particularly in soil stabilization and nitrogen fixation, which enhances soil fertility. This species is also utilized by local fauna as a food source. Its adaptations to arid conditions include a deep root system that allows it to access moisture from deeper soil layers and a growth form that minimizes water loss. These traits make Astragalus micromerius a vital component of its ecosystem, contributing to biodiversity and the resilience of the Chaco region’s flora.
